RANDA FAMILY STORY

DULUTH, MN – A Duluth family is finally seeing a light at the end of a troubled tunnel. In September Karl and Mary Randa received the devastating news that Karl’s cancer had come back with a vengeance. And then, if that weren’t bad enough, the Randas lost their home to foreclosure.

Karl Randa is the father of four boys. His eldest  – Nelsen Randa – says once he found out about his father’s terminal cancer he looked to his faith for hope.

“My dad’s my best friend and I know he’ll beat this,” says Nelsen.

The whole family is very hopeful that Karl will win his second fight with his cancer.

“We’re all praying for a miracle right now.”

Karl is battling a rare form of cancer known as Ewing’s Sarcoma. He won his first battle with the disease four years ago.

Karl’s brother, Leif Randa, says the situation has been overwhelming for the entire family, “when it came back it came back and strong, it’s very aggressive.”

“I’m just proud of Karl, he’s being very brave and courageous with cancer, he’s fighting it and he’s a fighter.”

While fighting the cancer, The Randa’s lost their home in foreclosure. They we’re given 30 days to move their family of six somewhere else.

Tim Mlodozyniec and some of Karl’s other childhood friends stepped up, opening a Go Fund Me page, “we took Karl out one night and basically heard more details about what Karl was going through and we went out afterwards and decided that there were some immediate needs that Karl had.”

The Go Fund Me page that Karl’s high school friends set up for him and his family have already raised over 22,000 dollars in just under 27 days now that money is going to help the family be able to move into their new home.

“We’re just trying to make things as easy as we can for him,” says Mlodozyniec.

Once word spread about the Randas’ problems, friends of Karl came out of the wood work to show their support.

“The generosity of the community is amazing for him, the other day, he felt like Jimmy Stewart from that movie, ‘It’s a Wonderful Life.'”

The family moved into their new home November 1st and now all the family has left to worry about is time. Karl’s second son, Kal, says getting a roof over their heads takes away a big part of the stress.

“I’m taking a bit of a break from my classes to help with the move and then also spend time with my dad before he passes,” says Kal.

Though the end is possibly near for Karl, Nelsen is still holding on to hope for his best friend, “I have a feeling that my dad’s case is going to be one that, when he wakes up all the cancer will be gone.”

Karl and his wife, Mary, frequently travel to the Mayo Clinic to receive treatment.

There is a spaghetti benefit at Mr. D’s in Duluth on November 12 from 2 to  6 p.m. with live and silent auctions. All the proceeds will go into a fund for the Randa family.
